Avichive is a personal archive application built on a filesystem inventory. This section connects its original purpose to its current architecture.

Read the archive’s history for the multi-drive problem and the shift from counting files to recovering useful material. Then read how it works to follow a file occurrence into unique content, cloud storage, derived media, analysis, and curation.

Three distinctions make the rest of the guide easier to follow:

  • Occurrence and content: several paths can hold identical bytes. Their provenance remains useful even when those bytes share one preserved original.
  • Evidence and decisions: metadata and model output inform review. The archive records human decisions separately.
  • Original and derivative: a viewable image or playable video makes content accessible; the preserved original retains the source bytes.

The capability reference gives the source baseline and dated measurements used throughout this guide.
